Lola

Meet Lola, our December 2008 case of the month. Lola is a 2-year old female Shih Tzu owned by Emily Bille of Waupun. Emily brought Lola to us for a second evaluation because of a 2 month persistent problem Lola was battling with bladder stones.
Emily recognized Lola was developing a problem when she began urinating in the house which was very out of character for Lola. Lola was treated with antibiotics initially for a bladder infection by her regular veterinarian. Her problems did not resolve, so ultrasound and x-rays were performed which confirmed the presence of bladder stones. Diet changes were tried to attempt to medically dissolve the stones, but this was ineffective.

Due to the size fo the stones present, Dr. Geurts recommended surgery to remove them followed by strict diet changes to prevent future recurrence. Lola underwent bladder surgery on November 6th 2008. Four very large stones were removed from her bladder (see photo below).

Emily reported that 24 hours after surgery, Lola was doing great with no sumptoms of bladder discomfort. Lola will remain on a special diet for the rest of her life to prevent recurrence of the stones.
