Kelly

Kelly is a seven-year old border collie owned by Ladeen and Ken Pollesch of Markesan, WI. She was presented to the clinic after being hit by a car Kelly sustained massive trauma to her hind limbs. When Kelly arrived at the clinic, she was in "shock" and was semiconscious and pale. She was unable to stand on her hind legs. Supportive care for treatment of shock was given involving the placement of an intravenous cathater giving IV fluids and drugs to control pain. Once Kelly was stabilized, x-rays were taken to determine the extent of her injuries. She had a severely broken femur (upper hind leg bone), meaning the bone was in multiple small fragments.

The only reasonable treatment for Kelley was to consider amputation of her badly damaged hind leg. It was a difficult consideration for the Pollesch's to follow the path of leg amputation. Kelley is a very active dog that lives for outdoor play and activities. They had a hard time visualizing their dog happy with only three legs.

Kelly's love and devotion for her owners guided her through her course of treatment. Ken and Ladeen made the decision to do whatever was necessary to help Kelley through her recovery period. They couldn't imagine their home without their beloved Kelley!

Dr. Geurts performed the leg amputation, She removed the hind leg at the level of the hip joint. Kelley recovered very well from surgery. She stayed with Dr. Geurts and her family for the first three days after surgery, until she was able to learn how to compensate for the new sense of balance she needed to get around. Dr. Geurts taught her how to walk all over again, initially by holding a support towel under her stomach while she learned to "skip" along with her remaining back leg. It wasn't long until Kelley was getting around well with the other dogs outside!

Kelley is doing very well despite this unfortunate incident. Ladeen reports that she is back to chasing squirrels in the back yard and can move in a way that you can't tell her leg is missing! The Randolph Veterinary Clinic salutes Ken and Ladeen Pollesch--devoted pet owners-- We are proud to have you as our clients.
