I want tho give
a big THANKS
to Dr. Betsy and
her wonderful staff! They made me feel comfortable
leaving my boy
with them.
I had never left him anywhere before. Thank you
Dr. Geurts for
taking special care
of my Billy,
you have no idea
how much
I appreciate it.
Thank you
for allowing me
to spend time
with him while
he was recovering
and also letting
his mom, Daisey,
come and see him.
Billy is
a special dog,
my companion,
my trailing buddy
and my protector.

Thank you

Billy

Billy is a 7-year-old male American Bulldog owner by Polly Dake, Dodge County Humane Officer and integral staff member of the Dodge County Humane Society. He presented to the Randolph Veterinary Clinic after a 3-day course of progressive illness that included persistent vomiting, anorexia, depression, and dehydration. Physical examination revealed that Billy was extremely dehydrated and weak. His abdomen was very empty on palpation. His temperature was 102 degrees, and his mucous membrane refill time was very prolonged.

Polly explained that Billy is a house dog and had no access to anything she was aware of that he could have gotten into other than a stuffed chew toy approximately 1-2 weeks prior.

Bloodwork was taken and analyzed for a complete blood count, pancreatic enzyme levels, and blood chemistry analysis.

X- Rays were taken of the abdomen followed by a series of x-rays after a contrast (barium swallow) was given to the dog.

An intravenous catherer was placed in Billy's front leg vein and IV fluids were administered along with systemic antibiotics and anti-vomiting medication.

Billy showed marked improvement once he was on IV fluids for 12 hours. X-rays suggested an obstruction at the level of the small intestine. The decision was made to go to surgery and explore Billy's abdomen for a suspected intestinal obstruction.

Abdominal Surgery revealed a mass inside Billy's intestine that was completely blocking the flow of food. An incision (enterotomy) was made into the intestine and a large piece of stuffed chew toy was removed.

Billy recovered very quickly from surgery and was started on a soft bland diet and antibiotics. 8 hours after surgery, Billy was VERY HUNGRY once again and was already eating small amounts of food.

We are very fortunate to have worked with such a wonderful and cooperative patient such as Billy and a dedicated and caring owner such as Polly. We hope they have many happy years together!!!

By the way--Billy has been banned from any further contact with chew toys, despite his promises to never chew them up again!!
