Examination of his mouth revealed that he had developed severe dental disease which resulted in abscess formation of the roots of his teeth. Anesthesia and extractions of his teeth would be necessary to treat his condition. Antibiotics were prescribed to treat the infection in his mouth prior to dental surgery and pre-anesthetic bloodwork was performed to evaluate Codee's overall health condition prior to the procedure. 

Approximately one week later, Codee, who by the way weighs only 5.5 pounds, was brought back to the hospital for the extraction procedure. Due to the rapidly spreading infection in his mouth and the deep involvement of the teeth it was necessary to extract all of the remaining teeth in his mouth. Blood loss from the extracton sites was of concern during the procedure because of Codee's small body size and blood volume. Cautery was used to help control some of the bleeding. 

Codee did very well post operatively and now has a happy "toothless" grin. He is on a completely soft food diet which he is adapting to very well.
