Rubie Mae

MMeet “Rubie Mae” Owned by Lisa Jones of Beaver Dam. Rubie is a 6 month old female American Bulldog. Lisa brought Rubie in for exam because she suddenly started vomiting and was unable to keep solid food down.

Physical examination was unremarkable except for mild dehydration. Lisa thought that Rubie had eaten some asparagus, and that perhaps that had upset her stomach. Since Rubie’s condition was stable, Lisa elected to try a bland diet and some anti-vomiting medication to try and settle Rubie’s stomach. The vomiting never stopped, despite dietary change and medication, so Rubie came back to the veterinary hospital to have x-rays taken and blood testing.

X-rays immediately identified Rubie’s dilemna. There was an obvious wire foreign object sitting in her stomach. Ruby had eaten something that was obstructing her intestinal tract, and surgery was necessary to remove it.

Abdominal exploratory surgery was performed the following morning. A large stuffed animal with wings that contained wire was lodged in the area where the stomach empties into the small intestine (called the pylorus). Ribbons from the foreign object were extending about 6-8 inches into the small intestine. A surgical incision was made into the stomach to allow removal of the toy. Lisa identified the toy as a home decoration that Rubie somehow must have knocked off a shelf during play and then consumed.

Twelve hours after surgery, Lisa reports that Rubie is a NEW dog! She is hungry again and full of energy! Proving that puppies have an amazing resilient recovering ability!
