Shilo

Meet Shilo, a 5 year old female St. Bernard. Shilo's family, Gene and Gwen Zimmermann of Fox Lake, WI brought her to our hospital because she was having difficulty whelping (giving birth). Shilo has delivered several litters of puppies in the past without complication, but that was not to be the case this time. Unfortunately, during this delivery she developed a condition called "uterine inertia" where the uterus muscles fatigue and fail to push the puppies out.

Upon presentation x-rays were taken which revealed three puppies still tucked far up in Shilo's abdomen. Medical treatment with oxytocin was immediately initiated. After several doses of oxytocin, Shilo delivered one more pup which was stillborn. The 2 remaining pups failed to be delivered with medical treatment.

The decision was made to perform an emergency caesarean section. The Zimmermans elected to have Shilo spayed at the same time for fear that she would have problems with any future pregnancies. Shilo did remarkably well during surgery and two pups were delivered via c-section. Unfortunately, the last two pups were also stillborn, but Shilo still had eight beautiful health babies waiting for her in recovery.

Shilo is a proud mother of eight pictured here on our website.
