Tia

Meet “Tia”, an 11-year-old Doberman owned by Suzy Wilkinson of Cambria. Tia came to our clinic for evaluation of sudden lameness of her right hind leg after experiencing a fall. Physical examination and x- rays were consistent with acute rupture of her cranial cruciate ligament in her knee.
Tia’s age warranted complete workup prior to considering surgical repair of her knee to be certain that her body functions were OK to handle anesthetic. Her blood work indicated that there were some abnormalities with liver enzymes that needed to be addressed before surgery could be considered.

Tia also had another complication before her knee could be repaired. She had difficulty walking with her right front leg due to the growth of a VERY large benign fatty tumor called a “lipoma” in her armpit region. The tumor was the size of a large grapefruit and impaired free range of motion of her leg when she would walk adding tremendously to the difficulty of getting around with a damaged knee.

Suzy agreed it would be best to remove the massive tumor from her front leg before considering fixing her knee problem. Medical management of her liver concerns greatly improved, so Tia had surgery to remove the extensive tumor impeding the function of her arm. Surgery involved a massive incision that took several hours to close.

Tia healed remarkably fast following surgery. Suzy told us that it was an amazing moment when Tia suddenly “realized” that her leg could move freely again and she started walking like a new dog! We look forward to working with Suzy and Tia in the coming months as we address her upcoming knee repair. Our medical team is proud to have provided the treatment that has improved Tia’s quality of life.
